Playstation 2 Graphics Problems

I recently purchased an old copy of Shadow of the Colossus for Playstation 2. The disk was in pretty rough shape, but I dug out my old PS2 slim to try it anyway. I bought a generic PS2 component cable and hooked it all up to a Plasma TV. The game runs fine, framerate drops nonwithstanding, but it looks awful. There is some serious screen tearing going on in the background and what I can only describe as pixel "movement." I'm aware that the PS2 doesn't look great on HDTVs, but my other games run fine and look markedly better. I am running it with progressive scan on, but disabling it doesn't fix the issue. Could the scratches on the disk actually worsen the graphics quality? Would a disc in better shape look better?

Solution
The scratches could definitely be an issue. Unlike PC or next-gen console games, the game runs entirely off the disc. That game had a lot of data on it, if I recall. It was a giant world. I would try to find another disc, if possible.

Sotc has a lot of framerate issues on the ps2 but I never experienced massive tearing and glitching. Only on my used copy I had problems with the first bus Valus's arena not loading correctly but the remainder of the game was fine.
