Re: Offline Updates for CS Source

This is ridiculous.

Can't play online without broadband - can't play offline without
broadband (no bots in retail version)

If someone would burn me a dvd of the /steamapps folder I will pay
them for it!

btw - I don't think this is immoral - but would it be illegal?

I'm not going to do it for you, I don't have a DVD burner, and all those
CDs would take a while... sorry; but I would imagine if you got someone
to actually use the "Backup" function of Steam to create a disc backup,
then that backup should be freely shareable to other Steam subscribers.

If you have retail then to patch HL2 and CS:S to the current release is feasible
on 56k. I only have 64k ISDN (until my town gets ADSL in a couple of weeks) and
the updates are not so big. If you let it go overnight it should be done by
morning.

If however you still don't want to do it and you live in the UK as your email
suggests, email me your address to

spamtrap<at>techaddict.net (replacing the @ symbol obviously) and I will send
you a DVD

Your post is ridiculous, and I'm going to show you why...

You CAN play online without broadband - I play CS:S online all the time
with 56K dialup. Sure, I'm not going to be the greatest sniper, but I
can still kick some decent ass when using appropriate tactics.

You CAN play offline without broadband - there ARE bots for the retail
version (there are bots for all versions). Where'd you get this
incorrect information from anyways? If you can't play with bots because
the update is too large, start the update and wait patiently. Steam can
resume downloads for a reason.

If I can do it with dialup, YOU CAN TOO (unless you have a crippling ISP).

> btw - I don't think this is immoral - but would it be illegal?

It's completely illegal - Valve say so in one of their Steam FAQs.

Hmmmmmm.

Thanks for replying guys.

First of all - Thanks 'I Like toys and Cake' for trying. I have HL2 up
to date - Would you mind if I e-mail you a screen capture of my
steamapps folder to see if theres some stuff I don't need?

Second, Gfree - Sorry for not being clear - I meant unpatched retail
version. My understanding was there are no bots in the unpatched
retail version - I admit I haven't tried it offline or on 56k yet.

I have not played anything (Urban Terror was my old favorite) online
for a while - Since broadband has gotten common the disadvantage is
too great ( I'm not very good in the first place).

Thanks again
Brian

Hmmm.... I'd be interested to hear how you did this....

I'm on 56k (read 46666bps) and I dont think I've managed a ping under 500!
My PC is of a very good spec, but just dont have Bband in our area yet.

Have you applied some optimisations?

It took me about 3 hrs to update via steam from the retail version to a
working offline version but I happily play with bots all the time.

You can but I'm not sure what you mean by anything you don't need
here is a screenshot of my steamapps folder as of today if this also helps you

Not exactly. I haven't fiddled with any console variables if that's what
you mean. My technique for playable 56K dialup gaming in CS:S is as follows:

1. Make absolutely sure you're not using ANY bandwidth for anything else
except CS:S. In other words, no downloads or uploads. Make sure there is
NO SPYWARE AT ALL running on your computer. If there is, it'll probably
be sending info about your computer to a server far away, which takes
precious bandwidth away from you. Run SpyBot or AdAware or something to
get rid of it. This I cannot stress enough. Apart from lagging
enormously, you can get lag spikes as well if you're not prepared.

2. Disable Voice support. Apart from stopping people saying "n00b" all
the time (which gets pretty annoying), I'd presume that this will stop
extra bandwidth being used to transmit the audio.

3. Join a fast server. Since I'm an aussie I have plenty of
Internode/Gamespace servers to choose from. My average ping is roughly
170-190 (changes depending on how many other players there are).
