Not exactly. I haven't fiddled with any console variables if that's what
you mean. My technique for playable 56K dialup gaming in CS:S is as follows:
1. Make absolutely sure you're not using ANY bandwidth for anything else
except CS:S. In other words, no downloads or uploads. Make sure there is
NO SPYWARE AT ALL running on your computer. If there is, it'll probably
be sending info about your computer to a server far away, which takes
precious bandwidth away from you. Run SpyBot or AdAware or something to
get rid of it. This I cannot stress enough. Apart from lagging
enormously, you can get lag spikes as well if you're not prepared.
2. Disable Voice support. Apart from stopping people saying "n00b" all
the time (which gets pretty annoying), I'd presume that this will stop
extra bandwidth being used to transmit the audio.
3. Join a fast server. Since I'm an aussie I have plenty of
Internode/Gamespace servers to choose from. My average ping is roughly
170-190 (changes depending on how many other players there are).
