Please critique my $2000 system!

Dec 30, 2012

This is what I have so far! I haven't built a computer since 2004 and have decided to go a bit whole hog with it since its not something I do all the time. Wanted 6 cores and 32gigabytes due to desire for video and photo editing on top of gaming. I am not sure if I can do better on the ram price wise but the specs and gskill's reputation looks good. I am ok with 256gb hd space for now and will get more in the future, as i have some older drives lying around. The power supply also looks like a great deal in terms of power for the price as I will do SLI eventually. About video card I would prefer 4gb ram because I need to support approx 2600x 1800 resolution at max settings.

I know I have a lot to learn, so what do the experts think ?

first of all, x79 is pointless unless you do at least 6hrs of video rendering (like extremely large 1080p or higher files). a 3930k is only 10 sec faster than the i7 3770k in multi-threaded rendering. the price difference will not be made up unless you do a lot of it.

home theater setups are 1080p at the best. why would you need something that runs 1440/1600p? also, if you need optical, you might as well get a sound card for the best playback

drives from 2004 wont work. back then they used IDE interfaces and now they use sata, which wont work together

a x79 build provided that you do at least 6 hrs of video work a day. otherwise dont bother. its not worth it

a z77 based build. much better if you are not doing rendering as a job

sound card recomendation.
