hdmi to dvi cable supports only display, and hdmi to hdmi supports display and audio.
However, I'm using a hdmi to dvi cable connecting a monitor's hdmi port to a gpu's dvi port. Audio(built-in speaker) has no problem at all.
Is it due to GPU ? or built-in speaker of monitor ?

When you are connected to an HDMI port on your monitor, your graphics card sends HDMI signals, including audio.

When you are connected to a DVI port on your monitor, your graphics card sends DVI signals, which do not include audio.

Whether you are connecting from a DVI or HDMI port on your graphics card doesn't matter. Both types of ports (DVI/HDMI) can send either DVI or HDMI signals on modern graphics cards, it will decide based on what port the monitor has.

HDMI is an extension to the DVI standard, so they use the same cable wiring. There is no internal difference between a DVI and an HDMI cable, only the shape of the connector on the end is different (other than DVI cables might have an extra set of wires if it is a DL-DVI cable). Therefore, adapters don't affect anything either. It is simply a DVI/HDMI cable that has the DVI style connector on one side and HDMI style connector on the other side.
