Here is my problem. First off my system is a MSI GT70 2pc with an i7 4910MQ, 1 single 8gb ram card with four empty slots, NVIDIA GTX 870m, two brand new western digital hdds, and windows 8.1. The one with the OS is a WD black edition that turns over at 7200rpm, and the other spins at 5400rpm(also WD). The BIOS is the stock version.

The problem all started because I wanted to play Just Cause 2 with my ps3 controller, so I downloaded the motioninjoy drivers, and the ds3 tool. However the ds3 tool did not detect my controllers even though the control panel did.

I opened up the calibration menu in the control panel, and while the calibration was running, the controller got unplugged accidentally. The computer then froze, and went to BSOD. The BSOD displayed was UPC Watchdog Violation.

The BSOD claimed the computer would restart, but that never happened, there was no count down. The computer seemed to go into deadlock.

As a result I manually rebooted, only to find the same BSOD happening about a minute after every start up. In an attempt to fix it I uninstalled motioninjoy, and ran a system restore to an earlier date. Neither solved the problem.

I then went into the BIOS and reset it to default settings, after which it started refusing to boot my hdd in UEFI mode, even though its visible in the BIOS and has a UEFI version of windows 8.1. The HDD only boots when I set the BIOS to legacy.

Even after that I still got the same BSOD, so I decided to try safe mode. It turns out in safe mode, the BSOD doesn't happen at all, no matter how long I stay on, even with networking enabled.

My problem is I can't seem to find what driver or service may be causing the UPC Watchdog Violation BSOD, and I cant boot back into UEFI mode.

I just wanted to play Just Cause 2 🙁.

P.S, I am posting this from safe mode with networking

Hey there, Shikori!

I'm glad you've solved your BSOD issue! Good job with the troubleshooting.
As for the UEFI BIOS problem, I'd suggest to go to your motherboard manufacturer's website and make sure everything on the mobo is up to date - firmware, BIOS version and drivers for your OS. I'm not sure but I think they might have a desktop utility that will let you change the BIOS settings from your desktop. Check this one out as well!

Keep me posted! Hope this helps! :)

ITS A MIRACLE!!!! I was tinkering around disabling services, then I got stuck in a boot loop, after which I was asked if I wanted to restore the system, which I did. The computer restarted and froze on the windows logo. I was tempted to power down, but I left it. After a while the screen flashed blue and the system restarted. When it did, I was waiting for that BSOD, but it still hasn't happened yet. I did a restore before, and it BSODed as soon as I logged in.

Now all I have left is that UEFI issue.
