Please Help! I need 32bit on a 64bit W7 Computer

Hi, Salesperson told me I can choose the OS to be 32 bit during the initial installation of my laptop BUT I went through the install slowly and was never given the option. It is a Sony VAIO E series. I have a usbpre 1.5 that won't run on a 64 bit system. Can anyone help? Is it possible to use 32 bit on this computer?

Hi,I have 4GB RAM but that's not the issue. I have an external audio device that won't run on a 64 bit OS. The salesperson assured me I could choose to install the 32 bit OS during the initial setup BUT it did not give me that option (I went through the setup very slowly to ensure I could make the choice).

I purchased the laptop today - it is a Sony VAIO E Series, Windows 7 Home Premium.

You could try a system recovery if it has a recovery partition. It might then give you the option to install 32 or 64 bit Windows.

Nothing in the box - just pre-installed.

Where did u buy it from? A store? Go back and tell them it is not what u wanted.

I think it is OEM and it comes in x32 or x64 only.

That's why u did not have the option to choose the x32bit version.

I did write it in my original post ... it's a usbpre 1.5 digital audio external input device.

It is OEM version for sure. And the license is in that case EITHER 32bit OR 64bit. So basically the salesperson lied to you, probably not intentionally though, the Windows licensing schemes are intentionally full of traps to make you need to upgrade or buy new OS version frequently.

Anyway, are u sure it runs on W7 x32bit? I just checked the device support and it says up to Vista x32....

And you need at least professional version for the XP mode. Back to shop it is as usual...

And to make things clear it is 16bit software that does not run on 64bit OS. 16bit apps can be run in 32bit OS without special compatibility modes.

Hi everyone,

Thank you very much for trying to help me out. The outcome was that the salesperson gave me the incorrect information.

The store gave me a complete exchange for another machine that gave me the option to use 32 bit Windows instead of 64 bit.

It turns out it was manufacturer specific and Toshiba did offer the option but Sony didn't.
