Price is clearly an issue if the newest CPU you're looking at is 7 years old.
The i7-6700 is going to be your best bet I'd say. That being said, it's also presumably the most expensive option, so what would you give up on the GPU front?
A wireless adapter costs $20-$30.

OK fair enough. Like I said, i am no expert.

I've just read lots of threads that start w/ "i have a high-end PC why am I getting 20 fps on this game from 2008" and so on. And the responses tend to be essentially that these old games aren't compatible w/ the latest CPUs.

And that's the scenario I am trying to avoid.
