Umm, I've ordered a new GPU, 16GB of DDR3 RAM, and a new power supply unit. I'm going to format my PC, so recently I searched for my Windows 7 Home Premium CD, to get it ready for the format and to use my cd key when it asks for it..

Sadly I couldn't find it, most likely my parents threw it somewhere. I checked on My Computer's Properties, and I can see the Product ID and it says Windows is activated. So my question is... is this attached to my motherboard? (I think I read that somewhere once), so if I format will I get to install it without writing the key again? Because I'll be using the same Asrock motherboard obviously.

Also, I saw Microsoft's ads about free upgrades to Windows 10 only for a year after it releases, I can upgrade to windows 10.. will it give me a new cd key if I do that? Is it even worth upgrading to it anyway??

Please help, I don't want to pay for another CD key.. when I know I own the original windows 7 64 bit home premium edition.. Is there a way where if I give microsoft my Product ID, they would send me a new cd key? Or is that even not necessary and I'm good to go for a format with what I have already??

P.S I have a windows 8 DELL laptop (It's pretty new, about a year old) that also has an original windows 8 "pre-installed" on it, maybe I can use that for my pc when I format? PLEASE LET ME KNOW, sorry for writing a lot, and I hope you all can help me with clear answers, THANKS IN ADVANCE really!

1. You will need to know the actual license key. This is NOT the product key you are looking at.
Use Belarc Advisor before you do anything, to retrieve that license key.

2. Yes, you can Upgrade to Windows 10. You have until July 29 2016 to do this for free.

3. For the Windows license on the Dell laptop...no, you cannot use that.
