Please HELP me to choose a NEW CPU!!

I have been researching for a little while now and have possibly narrowed the field to 4 cpu choices (unless you all add more:). These choices should based upon a Non-gamer platform that instead needs multitasking capabilities with some minor video editing and Photoshop with the capability to run multiple monitors. I do have a holdover GPU from last system that works fine with my current set up 1024MB ATI AMD Radeon HD 7700 Series (MSI). I do also have 8gb of 1066 DDR3 left over as well.

**All will be priced with Motherboard and 16 gb of RAM.

1. Core I5 6400 2.7GHz $341
2. Xeon 1231-v3 3.4GHz $354 ($302 w/existing 8gb RAM)
3. Xeon E3 1230 3.4GHz $442
4. Core I7 6700 3.4GHz $430

With these choices do I have a cooler fan included or do I buy that separate?
Also will there be a need for more than 16gb of RAM on any of these?

The xeons are server processors and not really suited to what you want to do. I would go with the i7 for editing but for the tasks you want the processor is not anywhere near as important as the graphics card. All the tasks you mentioned are graphics intensive and you will need a good card for those to run smoothly. I would say 16gb of ram is perfect for what you are doing as video editing can get pretty ram intensive. Cheers!

It's a good chip but not designed for what you want to do. If you were hosting a server you would want that any day of the week. For you purposes it is more expensive for ultimately lower performance.

Xeon E3-1231v3 + h97 motherboard was a great choice before skylake. Now that skylake is here, an i7-6700 + H170 (with the option of h110 if you really are on a budget and don't care about connectivity et al) makes much more sense for a non gaming build.

Once again though. This is more of a server build. You would be much better of with a good i7 and a powerful graphics card.

ok i have to clear up some things because afew people seam abit confused. the xeons he listed are not specifically for servers and it would be difficult to find a server that has those chips. The ones he listed are identical to many i7s and support more features (not less) additionally all the cpus he listed other then the i5 have 8 threads. with that said the 6700 is still the fastest however the Xeon 1231-v3 would be the best if you dont mind a limited upgrade path due to the lower price and only a slight compromise in performance.

i personaly run a build like that and its far from a "server" build you also cant beet the price of those cpus at 60 each

I know, but I just wanted to point out that if he did want a xeon based workstation, you don't really need to drop a couple grand on a slightly less older xeon build when the E5 2670 would perform nearly the same in most tasks for a fraction of the price.

Like I said in my first post, the i7 is most probably the best choice for him.

xeon e3's are the budget alternative to i7's and will be cheaper for the same performance. its the xeon e5 and e7's that will set you back abit if you buy new

Intel will still be making newer and better cpu's for the LGA1151 socket, which is what the i7 6700 is compatible with. The same isn't true for most of the older socketed cpu's. So if you get the 1231, a LGA1150 socket, you won't have any future cpu's to look forward to upgrading too.

I get it you are talking Motherboard. But there is no guarantee that the next gen Intel will work on a 1151 either right?

Well the next generation Kaby Lake cpu is LGA1151. So for the most part, it should be compatible with current gen boards.

Eventually they will move onto a new architecture, but that's just how progress and innovation works.

There is also the point of a skylake motherboard supporting better/newer peripheral standards, e.g. PCIe3.0 for add in cards, NVMe for storage, more USB ports, DMI 3.0 for a faster link between CPU and peripherals in general, etc. Skylake CPUs also max out at 64GB ram for Xeon e3 and Core i3,i5,i7 cpus where as the older ones max out at 32GB. Things like that mean that upgrading your computer in gneral, and prolonging its life will be easier and viable for longer on a skylake build than an older cpu architecture.

no. everything skylake supports haswell does two minus ddr4 ram which means nothing. and xeons will support MUCH more ram then core cpus regardless of gen

next gen mabye not but it is garenteed they will make new cpus for that socket
