Hi. Could someone please tell me what is the matter with my PC. A few months back it decided not to boot up. The orange light flashed constantly, I tried everything, turn off for mains power and removing cables etc. I even hoovered the round the casings and as much externally as I could. Then when I tired again it booted up and worked for three months, now the same thing is happening again. I have to spent an hour or so turning pressing the button on and off in hope it will boot up. It works fine once booted up, but if you put it in hibernation mould or turn it off, I have to go through it all again and to be honest sometimes it takes a whole day to get it to boot.

Thank you soon much for replying. I know nothing about computers. All I know is it is a dell which is very old, but although used daily only for photographs and word. Everything is saved to an external drive. It runs on XP, purely because I have to use Picture it and this is now obsolete. How would I find out what PSU I have.. It that the pentium thingy...lol

normally a flashing orange light on mother board is a sign of sleep mode, pull the cmos battery after disconnecting your pc from any power source, then wait 5 mins, place the battery back on the motherboard and apply power, system should boot up.

the flashing orange light is "stuck in sleep mode" syndrome I have seen this on Dell and Asus motherboard.

Awww thank you so much. But I would not know or have a clue how to do what you suggest. Let alone find the battery. I will have to see if someone outside could help me. But what you have said about sleep mode, is encouraging...I don't want to have to pay for a tech to come in and tell me there is not hope. X

I have viewed the link you sent, but do not really understand it. As my tower doe not have more than one light. It normal turns green when pressed for boot up. But but when I press it, it continously flashes orange. I was also reading since you mentioned the battery. The battery has never been changed and it over 10 years old. It is a cr2032, I can pop to Sainsbury and buy one...as long as it has this number, will it be the right battery and it it worth trying that...
