Hi all,

So i have a MSI RTX 4090 Trio X (NON OC model) and a Intel i7-13700K.
And since there are no ATX3.0 psu's yet....(seriously even after MONTHS after the RTX 4090 still no ATX3.0 psu in EU...shame)
There is a reason why they went with a ATX3.0 for the RTX 4000 series otherwise why bother right?
I do want to test my new rig for possible issues so i can return the hardware before my return time is up (4 weeks).

Can i test my new 4090 with my existing EVGA 850 watt P2 Gold psu (7 years old) it has been seen as one of the best PSU's in its class with the following specs:

I will limit the cpu to MAX 90watt
I will limit the RTX 4090 power plan (MSI afterburner) to 70%
so instead of 450 watt draw it will be around 290 watt.
I just don't want to hear a "PLOFFF" sound when i turn on my pc or am i to cautious?
What is the name of the protection measure on my PSU when there is a HUGE power spike?

So am i fine with a good 850watt PSU just for testing if everything works until these stupid DELAYED ATX3.0 psu's come out will get a 1200watt PL PSU.

Thanks in advance

I wouldnt use an 850 w psu. I would use a quality psu with minimum of 1000w. Atx 3.0 is not a necessity, but the power is....

Thanks for the reply,

Not going to use the 850 watt psu as my daily PSU its just for testing and with both the CPU and GPU with power limits ie cpu max at 90 watt and RTX 4090 at 70% power limit. I just want to test the card if it works because there are NO ATX3.0 i can buy now in EU.

I'd forget about using the 850w. There's exactly no point in 'testing' a cpu/gpu if you cannot test it to its limits, like when testing a safety rope rated for 400lbs, you don't test it at 300lbs and say it's good.

That means a 1000w to 1200w preferable. You'll want to push both to 100% simultaneously and still have headroom for spikes or uneven usage, it's not unreasonable for a cpu to be at 70% and the gpu to hit 120% power limits, which on that scale is over 800w just on those 2 pieces of equipment.

There are ATX 3.0 like the MSI Meg Ai 1000p and I believe the Asus Thor V2 and several others available in the EU. Seasonic also supposedly launches its Vertex line in January.
