Helloo, I have done a ton of research before asking a question but I am very stuck, I hope the knowledgable people here can help. :)

I have a HP Compaq 5800 with two fans. I wanted to replace at least one as they are very whirry so I bought a Be Quiet 92mm PWM fan as the stock ones are 92mm with four wires. I easily fitted it to my case but when I came to plug it into where the old fan had been plugged in I found that it did not fit!

I've had little Google success but I did find this image:

The connector of my stock fans is like the left connector in the photo, the connector of my new fan (which I’m assuming is more standard) is like that on the right. The little plastic notch stops it fitting into my four pin fan plug. 🙁 Here is a photo of my motherboard fan socket (the brown one). Note how the gaps to allow for the notches are on either side, so the PWM connector can’t fit, it just hits the brown plastic backplate part.

a) Is there a way to make it fit?
b) I don’t think a 3 pin fan would fit either right?
c) Is my motherboard not supportive of PWM and is PWM good for someone who doesn’t want to control fans themselves but just wants a fan which will run slow and quiet until it is needed.

I can barely find any info about this connector, thanks. :)

Solution
Hi
Just take any Utility Knife and cut out the guiding plastic.
The goal is to make it smooth that`s how you can connect it to the mobo.

THe pin`s are 100% compatible !

Thanks! Are you 100% sure? Just because I can't return it once I cut it obviously. 😛

I don't know why I can't find any official information about my motherboard connectors anywhere, perhaps I'm not looking properly or don't know what I need to find.

Btw just to be clear, the first image of the two connectors is not one I took of my own connectors. I can't see the order of the coloured wires in the new fan I bought because it is a 'premium looking' black ribbon instead of four coloured wires I can look at and see the order of. (Just in case the wire order was the reason you are sure they're compatible.

What actually is the connector name for my stock fans if you know it? Thank you.

This is common on HP & Compaq systems.
They are not like OEM Desktop systems
When you change the HP mobo with OEM mobo you have common problem - connecting the sys fan on the OEM mobo

The intel says :
3 pin fans - fan power + RPM info
4 pin fan - fan power + RPM info + PWR ( rpm control )

You can fit 3 pin FAN in 4 pin mobo -> the FAN will blow on 100% ( you may need to cut out some plastic again here )
You can fit 4 pin FAN in 3 pin mobo -> the FAN will blow on 100% - the conector in the right on you image

The plastick guide on you fan connector is for safety reason !
To not allow you to connect the connector on 180 degree !
Since you keep the lead connector pin it`s OK !

To make it clear - you have to connect it like the both on you image - keeping the colour & pins

Thanks! Yeah I'll try just cutting off the problem plastic guide and leaving the outer one. What do you mean by this? "To make it clear - you have to connect it like the both on you image - keeping the colour & pins" thanks. :)
