Quick question for those who know what they're talking about!

I may be buying a new monitor soon with 4k res (3840x2160), at least a 27", a 32" or a 34" (the wide 21:9 models from Sammy, LG etc) but have not made up my mind yet. It'll have to be a VA or IPS. No gaming (at least no recent titles) will be played on the monitor.

My current GTX 570 (bought secondhand!) card does not support resolutions above 2k neither with digital or analog connections so I'm looking for a new or another secondhand card not much over £100/$130, £80/90 would be an ideal price. Would be using for general activities, browsing, some music/audio editing and watching Youtube/hi-def and not so hi-def television and movies so no gaming at all really. All I'm looking for is that they will still be getting updates in 2 years from now (2021) my current Nvidia card, Evga 570's final update was I think last year at the end of March 2018. I'm still on Windows 7 by the way (stick to what you know best!). Would rather stick to Nvidia too but I'm open to AMD aswell.

Reasons I want to upgrade are my 19" Viewsonic lcd just died in the last week probably a capacitor problem, luckily I had run it with another Viewsonic 20.1 wide lcd bought a year after the 19" but I reckon that is on it's way out.

Few reasons, the DVI input got corrupted at least 4 years ago, I tried using software editors like esid (can't remember the correct names) to fix it but I've since been using the analog output from my GTX 570 Evga card into the D-sub in of the 20.1". Also high frequency noises are coming from the rear of it which have been occuring for just a few years now which I don't think were ever there when it was brand spanking new so this tells me it's gonna die soon like it's older brother and I cannot be without a monitor for long if it does happen.

Viewsonic want around £100+ to repair the 19" but that is a no-no for me. Suppose I could take it to a local repair place for a cheaper fix but I can't be bothered really, it has served me well since 2005, that is good is my opinion.

GTX 950's look good but still quite expensive new and used. Are the older gens a good deal at this time? I guess you won't find many new cards of that or previous generations anymore. Don't know much about the AMD equivalents either so that would be some good info.

Also I imagine there would be no problem connecting a newer card to my motherboard? It's an Asus P8Z68-V/GEN3 board powered by an i7 2700k. Asus site states the slots it has are:

2 x PCIe 3.0/2.0 x16 (x16 or dual x8) *1
1 x PCIe 2.0 x16 (x4 mode, black) *2
2 x PCIe x1
2 x PCI

I've never understood the PCI standards, I just hope they aren't outdated preventing me from upgrading to a newer gfx card. I doubt they are but I'm not certain.

Thanks for your time.

Thanks for the info crystal, 700 series seems good but the next gen would be better (I guess that's the 900 series as there was no desktop 800 series) as I wouldn't have to upgrade as soon. Some of the 900 series are still quite expensive sadly even if they are a few years old now, will have to scour that auction site for any that pop up as some go about £60 used now and then.

Thanks also vapour, that Radeon card though is N/A at Amazon.

I did actual gaming on my 770 in 4k with low settings. I think you would be wrong to write off a 670, 680, 770, or 780. Especially given that you think 9xx are too expensive and given that you are not even going to game on it. The 6xx and 7xx gtx's are so cheap for what you get. I'd say avoid the 650 or 660, 660ti could be a decent performer, everything above that should be decent for you. Things like gtx650 or gtx750, I wouldn't even bother looking at when the 670's and 760's are so dang cheap.

So what ARE you doing with this workstation?
