I currently have a 3570k. Right now, I'm in the process of developing my own game on the UE4 engine. While the 3570k is great for gaming, it kinda lacks in the workload area (Building lighting, shaders in UE4 and general multitasking whilst using UE4).

I was looking at the 5820k, it looks like a great CPU for the price, it's pretty cheap, but I noticed it has no GPU, which worries me because of the improvements DX12 brings (the ability to use you CPU GPU alongside your standalone GPU).

I know the 6700 is releasing soon, but it has less cores/threads. Any help is appreciated. :D

sorta excludes most xeons. however, some lga 115x xeons have igpu enabled, so a future lga 1151 (skylake) e3 12xx xeon v5 (usually the ones with igpu enabled and more expensive) might be a good option. skylake equivalent to this:
Intel® Xeon® Processor E3-1246 v3 (8M Cache, 3.50 GHz)

or...
if you want to keep your current mobo, you might wanna look into lga 1155 xeon e3 12xx v2 cpus (might require bios update so check your mobo's cpu support list).

if you can wait a little while, you might be able to upgrade to a skylake-based lga 1151 xeon while the 3570k stays for the time being.

an lga 2011-v3 platform will be even better since those support 6 discreet cores and 12 threads. if you have the budget, then that will be a better option (it also has higher memory capacity limit).

If you're doing workstation load for video game then you're going to want a workstation GPU like the Nvidia Quadro series.

Why would you rely on the onboard GPU for graphically intensive workloads?

http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-5820K-vs-Intel-Core-i5-3570K/2579vs1316

The 5820k is vastly more powerful in multicore applications such as you specified. But you will need a need an entirely new motherboard and memory.

But the single core performance is not much of a gain.

If you absolutely need the extra cores and hyper threading then it might be worth it.

I say save your money, overclock your 3570k and buy a heavier graphics card.

With an LGA 2011-v3 socket he could go to up to 18 discrete cores and 36 threads with E5 v3 or E7 v3, but that's a 4500-7000 dollar chip which is absurd.

I say you should look at your budget and pick a Xeon and either a Firepro or Quadro.

s/he could. that does not mean s/he should. and a xeon e5 purchase isn't absurd for the right customers. x99 platform doesn't support xeon e7 cpus (at least not the asus x99-e WS mobo i was checking out). besides, no one is stopping him/her from buying a used e5 down the line

OP could start with a 5820K and upgrade later if necessary. for the budget conscious:

Hi. Thanks for all your answers so far. I'm still not sure which CPU to get though. My current specs are:

MB:z68ap-d3
CPU: I5-3570K
RAM: 16GB DDR3 1600
PSU: 7502 Corsair
GPU: KFA2 760 EX OC

I'm actually looking to start building a new PC, so I have a budget of around £1500 and don't mind having to buy DDR4. I also don't mind waiting for Skylake, if it means decent performance boost. I want to build a PC that can game, as well as do workstation stuff, do the quadro type GPU's aren't for me (It's also why I'd like the CPU to have a GPU, for DX12).

Agin, thanks everyone. :)

or a core i7 6700K with z170 chipset motherboard. since skylake supports DDR4, you will be getting a speed boost due to higher default memory (ddr4 2133 over the previous ddr3 1600/1866). the memory cap will remain the same (32GB for now, dunno if it'll go up to 64GB+)
