My motherboard is quite old - a Soltek SL-85DRV3 - and can only handle AGP 2X and 4X.

I have bought a Samsung SyncMaster 940BW LCD widescreen monitor and now need a video card that matches both the monitor and motherboard.

My request is: Could someone recommend a motherboard that is compatible with AGP 4X and gives a screen resolution of 1440 x 900 pixels which as appropriate to my new monitor?

Thank you.

I'm pretty sure any of the nvidia agp 6xxx series and ati 1xxx will do. And they all have dvi. Maybe the the nvidia 6200 is the better choice if u don't game.
It can be AGP 8X no problem.

What card do you have now?

Right now I have an ATI Radeon 7000, but it will not give me the required resolution. Thanks for your help by the way. I'll take a look at those cards on the web.

When you say 'it can be AGP 8X', do you mean that my motherboard will run an AGP 8X card even though it only supports 2X and 4X?

If anyone else has any ideas, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

The most important issue is the required resolution of 1440 x 900

Yes, the motherboard (4x) will run with an AGP card at 8x.

Thanks Stemnin: I think this is only true if the card is 8X/4X compatible. I have read that an 8X-only card will not run on a 4X mobo.

I have checked out a promising AGP card: the GeForce 6200 [Asus N6200/TD/128] but I cannot find any information on what resolutions this card is capable of. Does anyone know if it has widescreen 1440 x 900 capability?

All AGP 8x cards have been backwards compatible in my experience.

Same here. Get yourself a decent AGP card from newegg. Heres a good one.
My buddy at work just bought one of these and its pretty nice.
BFG Tech BFGR78256GSOC GeForce 7800GS 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 AGP 4X/8X Video Card - Retail

You can't beat that with a stick. One of the best AGP cards for $159 is about the best deal of the day really. Annnnd its the OC one even :) Life Time Warrantee too. :)
Good Luck!

edit: I just realized that you may have to upgrade your powersupply for this card also. Unless you have a fair one. This is taken from newegg.

"CPU with processor speed of 700MHz or higher
128MB of RAM
CD or DVD-ROM drive
An available AGP 2.0 slot or higher
35MB available hard disk space (50MB for full installation)
A minimum 400W system power supply (with 12V current rating of 20A or more)
An AGP compliant motherboard. Some motherboards violate the AGP specification and therefore this card may not physically fit in some systems
An available hard disk drive power dongle (smaller floppy disk drive connector is not sufficient)"

Hope this helped instead of hendered :)
