I have been trying to find what frequency multiplier does in BIOS. I have settings like 2X, 3X, 7.5X, etc.

Can u tell me what that means?

thanks

That is your CPU clock multipler. Depend on what kind of CPU you have it may be locked at a certain multipler, and hence that setting may not do anything. Your CPU's clock speed is determined by the frontside bus (FSB) speed multiplied by that 'multiplier' (hence its name.)

My potato chip is a P III 600/133 socket 370.
You said (above) that it depends on what type of chip u have.
Well, will the higher settings increase performance for a P III?
If yes, is there a CPU benchmark program that i can get to compare before and after results?

thanks.

I believe all P3s are clock locked. The only way to increase performance is to increase (overclock) the front side bus (FSB.) You've got to make sure your memory can handle the higher speeds though.

yes all p3s and celerons are multiplier locked, and you can only increase the fsb. you must have a decent board to do this, such as the latest ones from asus, abit or msi those allow you to increase the fsb in steps of 1 MHz!

There are actually 2 versoins of the 600/133, the older 600B Katmai and the newer 600EB Coppermine. You MIGHT be able to get the 600B to 650, but the 600EB is good for about 950 or more. Too bad that you already have a 133 chip, as the rest of your system parobably can't take much more than that. If you had the 100, you could set it to 133 and get 800, providing it is an EB processor.
