Plextor 8/4/32A under Win2K

For some strange reasons, when I go in device manager in Win2K, my Plextor 8/4/32A is identified as SCSI and so is my Pioneer DVD-113.

I use an Asus A7V motherboard with BIOS 1005B and Via 4in1 4.28b. Both drives are connected to my ATA-66 controler (not the onboard promise controler). I also have an ATA-100 HD plugged in the Promise controler (identified as SCSI....). I think this issue might explain why I am not able to upgrade my firmware ...

Thank you for helping me out.

Are you upgrading the plextor firmware? Plextor recommends that you set the drive to pio mode in windows before upgrading firmware, although I uprgraded my 12/10/32 in dma mode before reading about the pio mode and it worked.

Yes I am trying to upgrade my firmware. The mode is set to PIO in my BIOS, so there should be no problem. I realised that the 2 controllers had the same Bus Number (also same PCI bus) and that my Plextor driver had the same Bus number + Target ID so this might be part of the problem. When I plugged all devices in the same Controller (Promise, on-board), they each got a different Target ID an the firmware upgrade worked flawlessly. Some tech support from Promise told me it was probably the fault of Via bus mastering driver, but as I said before I am running Via 4 in 1 driver 4.28b so it must be oe of the latest drivers... If I try the last "official" drivers (4.25a) there is just no option of installing Bus Master drivers under Win2K. I am tired of Via problems ... Now I understand why AMD doesn't want to leave the it's chipset manufacturing entirely on 3rd party cie.

There is no option of installing the busmaster drivers in the 4.25a drivers because the bustmaster driver is only for win98. If 4.28 is installing them then either via has come out with win2k busmaster drivers or there is a bug in the install program. In another post someone had drive problems and after uninstalling the busmaster drivers the drive problems went away. So, I believe that there's a bug in the 4-in-1 driver and you should not install the busmaster drivers.
