PLS HELP, NO SOUND THROUGH JACK - PC TO HDTV VIA DVI - HDMI + JACK TO

Any help would be very much appreciated,
Im haveing problems playing back sound through my phillips ambilight hdtv, I haven it connected my pc through a hdmi lead with dvi converter on my pc

that takes care of the video, I have tried in vain to get the audio on my tv working using a jack - jack from pc audio jack to the audio in on my tv

i have tried jack - phono leads, tv firmware update, i assigned the audio in connector in the tv settings menu to correspond with the correct hdmi channel on my tv


the onboard soundcard outputs to desktop speakers fine just no joy with the pc

Pretty sure the easiest way to do this is using the (S/PDIF) port on your graphics card if it has one, or if you have a newer graphics card they usually has a mini-hdmi port, so you can purchase a mini hdmi-hdmi cable. That's what I use since getting dvi-hdmi to work with sound is a pain.

Also if you have surround sound for your tv and a soundcard for your pc you can use (S/PDIF).

Or you obtain a standard headphone jack adapter that converts the single out put to 2 Stereo RCA connectors, a red and White connector for Left and Right sound, then via an RCA Coaxial extension piece (dual connectors for stereo) if the TV is more than 3 to 6 feet away, then connect those connectors to the appropriate audio inputs on the TV if available, and you can pipe the stereo sound from the PC to the TV, while obtaining the Video from the DVI/HDMI connection.

And if all else fails, plug pc speakers into your computer and have sound through them while having video through your T.V.

i dont have an s/dif on my graphics card, i do have one on my mobo,

i have a jack to red/white phonos - no joy with this either i will try and get hold of a spdif cable, what connection would i need for the tv end of the cable as there is no spdif in on the tv just spdif out?

I'm by no means an expert and have no personal experience with using that method myself but I'm fairly certain the only way to use it would be plugging it into a surround sound system and not directly into the tv, I know my tv doesn't have that connection.

Check the manual for the TV carefully. I don't know about yours. I have a Samsung HDTV with 3 HDMI input ports plus a couple Component and Composite Video, plus some audio inputs. It is set up so that only ONE of the HDMI inputs is automatically associated with ONE of the audio inputs, and those cannot be changed. So I MUST plug the audio feeds from the computer's audio output jacks into the correct TV inputs, PLUS ensure the HDMI feed is into its correct connector. Then when I select on the TV the correct HDMI input, I get the audio, too.

By the way, in SOME systems you can get audio from PC to TV via HDMI even though you are using a DVI output port. Standard DVI does NOT include audio, so a DVI-to-HDMI adapter gets you only video. BUT most current video cards based on ATI (now AMD) chips (and also some using Nvidia chips) actually add audio output on their DVI ports using pins not assigned in the DVI standard. (Some use a pass-through connection from the audio output jacks, but some contain their own audio output functions.) On those systems you CAN get audio onto the HDMI cable ONLY if you use a DVI-to-HDMI adapter that includes this feature - not all do! If this interests you, check the details of your video card and of the adapter you have been using.

NOTE that, if you can use these features to get audio onto the HDMI cable, then you will have to ensure that the sound output system in your PC puts sound out on the DVI connector. I have done it both ways. The first adapter I had did not connect audio in the DVI output to the HDMI cable, so I was doing your route: video only on HDMI plugged into just the right TV input connector, plus audio (2-channel) via RCA cables from the PC's audio ouput (front speaker) audio jack to the proper TV audio inputs. But when I got the correct DVI-to-HDMI adapter, I disconnected the separate audio cables and then went into the PC's audio setups and selected the video card as the audio output device, rather than the mobo's built-in audio chip. Works like a charm, and the 1080p display on the Samsung TV is great!
