Question Plug and play speakers do not work

Hello guys
I gave away an old HP Pavillion DV6 to my neighbour but the speakers do not work.
I did not feel like disassembling the laptop so I bought some plug and play speakers and connected them properly but they do not work.
The Windows volume is at 100.
It never happened to me before.
Can you give me some hint?

Did you check to make sure that Windows is supposed to be putting the sound out through that port? Did you turn on the external speakers? Do the external speakers need to be plugged into the wall for power?

Thanks a lot for your help.
I tried two of the three ports, the other one had the mouse in it.
The external speakers are very simple, have only a volume control and do not need to be plugged in the wall for power. I think they get power from the usb port.
They should be getting the sound from the headphone jack and I tried both headphone "sockets" but to no avail.
I welcome any kind of help.
I am writing from Italy.

Go into Playback devices and make sure they're set as the default playback device. If they don't show up in there, or in Device Manager (or anywhere else in Windows), then you have either a speaker failure or a USB issue at the laptop.

What's the make & model of the speakers?

Hello,
the external speakers are not faulty because I tried my own speakers in working order and they did not work either.
But I managed to get the internal speakers to work. I just mucked about with the mouse, and when I got to the AUDIO page I selected "speakers and headphones" and that did it.
As for the external speakers, I left them with my neighbour. His son-in-law works in the computer business so he will try to make them work.
