Plugging HDD instantly slows system

The HDD is from a laptop that no longer boots. I removed it to better confirm the issue with it. With windows booted just connecting the drive stops the OS. When booted off Windows install disk to attempt automatic repair it stops if the drive is connected. Any ideas?

"With windows booted just connecting the drive stops the OS." Are you attaching the drive to the motherboard or as an external drive through USB?

My strongest guess here is that the drive is toast. Is there anything on it that you need?

Through SATA
It does give a smart error on POST

I thought it was toast too. Any way to recover data? I'm fine if it is complex.

Hi there 16pinkk,

I guess you should first attach the HDD through SATA and then boot up your system.
So, does your system boot properly when the drive is attached or not?

In case it does, you can test the drive with some brand specific software(or a third party one) in order to see what is wrong with it. After that, you can try accessing it with some data recovery software.
In case it does not, I guess you can try the Ubuntu Live CD approach. There are quite a lot of threads on this in the forum. Here's one: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/267999-32-recover-data-mode

The computer wont go past any type of windows boot screen if the drive is plugged in. Ill try the live linux soon if I can.

I forgot this thread. I ended up plugging in for post to pick it up then unplugging before windows booted. Then plugged back in after windows was logged in. Finally I waited for the system to slowly respond and opened command prompt and used the diskpart clean command.

It's good that it runs fine now.
Yet, it would be a good idea to test it with some of these: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/282651-32-best-diagnostic-testing-utility
The results should provide a SMART report. Look for Current Pending/Reallocated/Uncorrectable sectors.
It is possible that the clean command is only a temporary fix.
