So my old HDD crashed, I replaced it and now I am trying to recover files from it using a USB to SATA cable. However, every time I plug it in, it crashes the software (Crystal Disk, Mini Tool Power Data Recovery, Disk Drill).

Does anyone know what is happening here?

What the professional data recovery specialists have as their tools of the trade goes beyond a mere license to use some software.

If the drive crashes those apps available to the public and you really need your data your chance is with them. Then again there's no guarantee as they might be able to recover some of the data.

Also the more you try to make a failing - in this case failed? drive - work and "stress it" as it were the less the chances of any data recovery.

Obtain a USB SATA dock. Like this:

Start your PC
After the system is booted up, put this problematic drive in the dock, and turn the power on.

What happens?

If the OS can read the drive, continue.
If the OS cannot read the drive, or the system crashes....you need to do one of two things:
  1. Pay a data recovery service to maybe possibly get some of the data from it
  2. Let that data go, and take this as a warning to institute a comprehensive backup routine.
