My modem is upstairs and my PC is downtstairs...I can plug my PC into a router via Ethernet to access the internet from my modem correct? And my router just picks up the wifi from the modem?

Solution
A router and a modem do not communicate through wifi (at least not without additional hardware).

Lets backup though.
There are modems and then there are modem/router combos. A modem will have one input and one etherent output while a modem/router combo will have wifi and multiple ethernet output ports.
So what modem do you have, and what router do you have?
