Question Plugging my 6pin into gpu causes psu to shut off

So I was playing skyrim when all of a sudden my pc shut off, after hours of troubleshooting I found out if I run my pc with a gt 705 it runs fine when I put my gtx 960 in without plugging it ìn with the 6 pin it runs and tells me to plug into psu, as soon as I plug into the psu it simply doesnt start untill I put the 705 back in

Relevant specs are
Asus h81m-plus mobo
8gbs ram
Gtx 960 2gb
Naxn?? 500w psu

We need a little history here because your post jumps around a bit.

When your PC was running Skyrim and shut off, was that with the GTX960? If so, was the GTX960 already running in that PC with the 6-pin PCIe cable connected to the graphics card?
