PLX Chip On a GPU vs. On a Motherboard - Is There a Difference?

Hello All,

Would the PLX chip being located on the GPU (GTX 690/HD 7990) be the same as a PLX chip being located on the Motherboard?

Example: 1155(1150)MB and a HD 7990/GTX 690 [GPU PLX] vs. 1155(1150) and 2 HD 7970's/GTX 680's [MB PLX].

I don't know if they're the same chip, and I doubt they are, but they function in the same way. (*Mostly. The dual-chip cards trick the motherboard into seeing them as a single card.)

I am looking a new computer, and I am trying to decide if I should go with a 7990 or 2 7979GHz Edition on a MB with a PLX chip. I am also trying to future proof (last at least 4+ years)

If you want to make sure you're good for the future, go with a pair of 7970s with a motherboard that supports crossfire; otherwise you'll be limited to buying another dual-chip setup when you want to upgrade.

I would wait a few months the 700 series and 8000 series will be coming out anf the 600/7000 series will be cheaper or you can go with next gen stuff... and yes 7970ghz xfire is the best for now.

For future proofing, would a MB with 3.0 x8/x8 be a good choice still? I know right now there is really going to bog down x8/x8, but could something in the future bog it down?

3.0 x8/x8 should be plenty - that's the equivalent of two full 16x channels of PCIe 2.0.
