Pokemon Firered/Leafgreen differences?

As someone who has never owned any of the previous Pokemon games for
gameboy what is the differences between Pokemon Firered and Leafgreen?
I was reading the latest Nintendo Power and it shows a walkthru and
explains how you play the game but it doesn't say how the two versions
are different. I was planning on picking up both of them for a trip
I'm taking at the end of september so my nephew and I could play them
on the long plane rides. Is there any problems using the wireless
link while on a plane? According to the article I can still use a
link cable so not being able to use the wireless links inflight won't
be a disappointment.

If I am right they are the same as Pokemon Blue and Red. The main
difference is the Pokemon that you can catch in the game. Some are only in
red others are only in blue. Also the frequency rate and location of
Pokemon are different. In one version a certain pokemon might be rare, but
they are plentiful in the other.
