I heard at one time that the 990 had a problem with Red Eye. Do you have any troubles with Red-eye?

In the 3.3 Megapixel range, I'd go for the Canon D-30, but that's a $3000 SLR. Otherwise, I think that the Nikon Coolpix 990 is an excellent buy (the the recent Canon Powershot G1 appears to be getting a lot of attention).

Anyway, check out the web site: Phil Askey has a lot of excellent info and reviews, and the discussion groups can help you make up your mind.

Actually, I would opt for a Ricoh RDC-700i. The 3.3Mpixel cam comes with a CFII and a PCMCIA slot, features built in Organiser functions, allows the use of Network or mobile phone cards (pcmcia), has a reather good lens. Moreover it has the sleekest "James Bond" design of any point and shoot digital camera available. The only drawback is, that the cfII doesn't support IBMs Microdrive yet, but I was promised that Ricoh will change that in the near future.

Otherwise I'd go for the good old Canon S20 or the new (but rather expensive) Canon G1!

I love my Sony CyberShot 505v/64MB Memory Stick...beautiful pics, lots of features. Just wish I knew more about picture-taking...

I have a Toshiba PDRM 70 3.3 mpx camera....it uses Smartmedia for memory. I'm very happy with it, especially with the slew of manual features. My only complains are the the loooong auto-focus time, and the lack of a nice grip. The pictures it produces are great though.

Isn't the S100 only 2.2MP camera. Anyway, i choose the Oly 3030. The S70 is more akin to a snapshot camera. Not too many features but very very sharp high res pictures. The Nikon was too bulky and so I settled for the Olympus 3030. Now I have all of these features, I do not reallyuse them though, maybe I should have gone for the S70.

Why hasn't the Kodak DC4800 been mentioned. Sure, it's only 3.1MP rather than 3.3 but from the reviews I've read, it's a very decent cam. Plus you can purchase one for around 500 dollars!

By the way - how "3Mpixel" is 3Mpixel...?
The sum of all red, green and blue pixels together is 3Mpixels, which means, to get 3 million of true color pixels, some interpolation has to be performed. This means you never can have a sharp picture at the pixel level...

...unless of course you have (and can afford) a camera with 3 CCD's...

...but then this has nothing to do with this thread.

Anyway, this came as a surprise to me when I found out about this. I always thought that the CCD contained 3mpixels of each base color...

I dunno y it hasnt been mentioned, but i have 1 and it sometimes focuses in weird places, and kodak said it was a manufacturing defect on all of the dc 4800. They are supposed to have a new one out that will have this problem fixed.

I tend to agree that Nikon makes the clearest picture and that the color balance is stunning. I have a Coolpix 880 and i absolutely love it. Not for the faint of heart though if you want to go in manual mode but it has EVERYTHING!!!

I have a CP880 too and must agree it's the best!
