Poor framerates in Mafia

System
=======

AMD Duron 1 GHz
MSI K7N420 Pro (nForce 420-D)
2 x 128 MB PC1600 DDR @ 2.0-2-2-6
Gigabyte Radeon 9000 (non-Pro) 64 MB

OS/Drivers/Software
====================

OS:Win2000 Pro SP3 / Windows ME

Driver: nForce UPD 2.03, Catalyst 3.2

Latest game patch installed (v 1.1)

Problem
========

This game runs like crap in levels that allows me to explore full map. I usually get 14 to 20 fps, sometimes little lower or sometimes little better. I get almost half fps compared to levels that doesn't allow me to explore full map. For example, in cutscences of full map levels I get about 30-33 fps in cutscenes, and in partial map missions I get about 60-63 fps (it seems to be max framerate allowed by the game, don't know why....refresh rate is 75 Hz and vsync turned off)

AGP is running @ 4x. All other games run as good as I expect. Can anybody tell me what's the problem? Is it normal? Or it's just happening to me?

That’s a pretty demanding game, assuming your system is running well. First thing I would say is try with 2X or 0X, and also change some of the game settings. That’s all I can think of.

Game settings
==============

Resolution : 1024 x 768
Color depth : 32 bit
Texture Quality/size : Compressed
Lightmap Quality/size : Truecolor
Tripple Buffering = On, Vsync = On
Anti-Aliasing turned off

I've tried 640 x 480 and 16 bit color depth, turned off triple buffering, but it doesn't help.

It looks like you have a dual boot, so which OS are you using? Your system doesn’t seem to be the most powerful, wonder if that’s it. Thing is I don’t know a thing about ATI cards. What about GTA3 do u have that game, just wondering how that ran, if u have it.

Triple buffering is a good thing, you dont want to turn it off.
If your fps is getting cut in half only because of the map being bigger, and the graphics arent more intense at any given moment, it sounds like you could use some more ram, or do some tweaking.
make sure you dont have ANY unneccessary things running in the background, or taking up any ram.
also make sure your page file is big enough, for you, probly around 1 gb. and in control panel--> system, performance.. set "adjust for better performance in applications" or some junk like that, u know what i mean.
Maybe u got some crazy HD loading going on while youre in the game.

Long live ATI.

Turning the lightmap to normal instead of true colour will help. But since you said that it's bad even in 640 480 then i guess it's just the rest of your sys.

I have tried closing all other background apps., but no impprovement.

My pagefile is 384 MB

I've tried this game with WinME, but the result was same

I'll try with 1 GB pagefile, but I don't think it'll help

WinME is better than Win98SE

It does sound a little low, depending what he uses, but if it was too small wouldn’t he get an error?

I've tried now with 1 GB pagefile. No improvement

Not that it will matter, but what OS are you using, and what is your resource before you start the game? Assuming your system is running well, I would think stick with adjusting the game details. If you have a 17-19” monitor try 1024-768-16 bit, AA off, if 15” 800x600, and try with Triple Buffering on/off. Just keep adjusting the setting, because it doesn’t sound like anything is really wrong with your PC. Stay away from 32 bit, and turn down some settings, like far distant and anything else. And beside do you even like the game?

Said before, tried 680 x 480 x 16 bit, but it helps veryyyyy little

Will try tuning down far distance settings...

Of course I like this game, this is why I posted about my problem with this game here.

You know I just installed the game. I have an XP1800 Gf4 ti4400 and I think you can just about forget trying to get the game to play any better then what it is already running. All I can say is lower the settings as low as they can go, and enjoy. I wasn’t getting much better then 20 and 30+ FPS, and hack I was in 800X600 w little performance difference.

I think you are wrong on this. I have a P4 2.4 B RDRAM and a geforce 440MX. Nothing can be worse than an MX and it runs fine 1024*768!! Except for the very first mission where there is a lot of lighting effects.

What am I wrong about? That his game isn’t going to do any better then what it is doing? I must have my system configured wrong, because I was only getting 20-30 as well, and changing the settings seem to have little affect. And I am going by the very first mission. It was playable, but nothing to write home about. If I’m wrong then what do you think it is???

It's really a very confusing problem. I mean i have the shittiest grafix card on earth and you have a ti4400!! The thing you two have common is a slower (comparatively) processor. Maybe thats the problem. Oh lemme check the Fps too again.

Well Spitfire says the lowest he is getting is 14-20. I looked on the CD and seen this:
> Disable the Truecolor Texture Quality/Size if selected.
> Disable Software Mixing Only
> Disable Fullscene Antialiasing
> Disable the Clip Always Option
> Enable Hardware Transform and Lighting
1024-768-16 bit, AA off
I also lowered the graphics in the game to Low. Now on the first two mission, while I’m putting along my FSP are between under 20 over 40……..

This is about the best I can do with these settings, before I start over clocking. To me eye candy isn’t an option and I’m not very impressed w the graphics. I like the game to look the best it can, and I can’t do that here, and have to settle for reasonable play. Like you said maybe latter in the game things will change. So again I will say that it doesn’t look like Spitfire is going to have any luck, because I doubt something is wrong with he set up, assuming all other games play well.

I´m a busy guy, so I didn´t read the whole thread...

I didn´t know you could get a lousy framerate in Mafia, since my friend played the game on a 1ghz Duron and a GF2mx - 1024x768 with everything on high.

So I doubt it´s your PC holding you back.
