Poor Nvidia GeForce GTX 760 performance

G'day all

I've been struggling with the poor performance of my 760 for ages now and I haven't been able to pinpoint anything (I'm not a guru with computers I just have some fundamental knowledge).

Rig:
Intel Core i7-4790 CPU @ 3.60GHz
16GB RAM
Windows 8.1 64-bit
Nvidia GeForce GTX 760


I run all games on lowest settings with minimal performance. They hold steady FPS for the first 5 or so minutes then all goes down the drain. I used to be able to run all games perfectly fine, most at max settings when my PC was first built although that slowly became worse and worse.

I've been playing RUST recently which I understand is a heavy game and uses up almost 4GB of my RAM on lowest settings but there was a day when it ran smooth on medium settings. When I get in I can play perfectly for a few minutes before the FPS permanently drops and everything struggles to render.

Rocket League is the very same, perfect game play first 5 minutes then about 5 FPS from then on.

I recently thought I fixed the issue of not having all CPU cores active but that barely made a difference.

Other people with essentially the same rig online have had similar problems and others run games magnificently.

Any advice, suggestions and/or solutions will be greatly appreciated.

Seems to me that the problem lies with the 760, not the CPU.
It is possible that it is overheating when gaming, leading to the GPU down clocking to preserve itself.
Make sure the cooling fan(s) are clean and that the airflow in your chassis is good.
Otherwise, it is possible that the card might be reaching the end of its life.
Making sure you're running the latest drivers too from Nvidia.

Hi, I recorded some temperatures just then and when Rust runs smoothly it records temperatures arounf 55 Deg C, and when the FPS hit kicked in and crapped itself the temps lowered to 40 or so Deg C. To me that sounds a bit like what you suggested, the GPU clocking down to preserve itself but I don't know exactly, that's why I need help.

The card is just over a year old, all parts are the same age and I always have the latest drivers.
