Hey guys I just swapped my computer case and when to turn it on for the fist time and it made a loud pop then smoked. I turned it off straight away and tried to find where Ito came from. I then turned it on again and it works fine. All Temps are good motherboard and cpu and gpu. All hhds work fine. Could it be my 4 to 5 year old ax1200watt psu? I think if it was my mother bord or gpu then it wouldn't turn on.

I7 4790k
Asus z97 mark s
2 GTX 1070 g1
3 ssd
1 hdd
1 cd drive.
Ax1200watt psu.

I recommend disassembling the machine and making sure that you didn't drop any screws or anything metallic behind the motherboard. It could create a short, but may not stop the machine from booting.

Let's say it shorts out one of the USB ports. The machine would still boot and be stable, but that USB port wouldn't work.

Could it be the PSU? It could. 4-5 years is more than I recommend using a single unit. However, the AX series is supposed to be ultra-premium so I'm surprised it started to malfunction so quickly.

It could be your PSU, but it could be something else.

Since your PC still runs, chances are something non-critical shorted out and other bits of your system are compensating -- at least for now.

I predict that eventually you will begin having problems with slow performance or mysterious crashes and reboots. I would NOT RUN YOUR PC until you find the source of the problem and replace the damaged component. Otherwise whatever failed has a high chance of damaging other things in your system.

Note where the smoke came from out of your case and start your search there.

Oh... OP was focusing on the PSU and you didn't really say which part you were targeting, so I couldn't tell you were talking about the motherboard.

In that case, it's not a bad idea to check the caps on the motherboard. Also, look for any scars along the board, specifically running from any power connection(s) to any integrated circuits. Also check for any strange liquids coming out from under the VRM cooler (that assembly that wraps around the left and top of the socket).

Yeah I would not boot your system until you pulled everything out of the case and gave it a thorough look-see. Do not take your PSU apart as mentioned but do give it a good smell once it has been out of your case a few minutes, inspect the both sides of your motherboard paying particular attention to the back, Look at your graphics cards and ram as well...basically look at/smell everything until you have a good idea what went bad. Once you do have an idea start with replacing that part and move forward with caution so not to damage any more parts then you already have.

Shine a flashlight through one opening and look for soot or anything that looks burnt from the others.

If the PSU is out of warranty, I'd simply pop the cover. The input caps will discharge within 10-20 seconds from unplugging the PSU from the power cord, courtesy from the 5VSB supply. Much quicker than the time it will take you to remove the PSU from your PC and open it.

Ok so I took out the motherboard and GPUs and could not see any thing on them that was abnormal as for the psu I think it's still under corsair warranty. Are they any good with warranty? I have another psu arriving in 2 days.
