My PC keeps popping up that I just plugged in a microphone when I didn't. I've been having trouble with sound. I can't for the life of me get the onboard sound to work. All started when I accidentally installed GeForce audio over my Realtek audio. I've uninstalled/reinstalled drivers a dozen times with no luck. Reset the CMOS and updated the BIOS. Nada. This mic thing just started yesterday. I had to uninstall the Realtek driver to get it to stop. Even unplugged the cables from the PC audio jacks and it still kept doing it.

Hardware short?

The only way to find out if its hardware or software is to dual boot an os like linux or another version of windows.

Jack sensing works by detecting the presence of a lower resistance. You should have the option to turn off jack detection in the Options Menu. It says something like Enable auto popup dialog, when device has been plugged in.

This will fix the symptoms, it won't fix what's actually wrong.

Do you still have the front panel connector connected to the motherboard?

Try this:

Go to Start –> Control Panel –> Hardware and Sound –> Realtek HD Audio Manager

Deactive plugged and unplugged notification by uncheck “display icon in notification area” option and click “OK”.

Click on yellow icon on top right hand corner

Disable front panel jack detection and auto popup dialog.

Click on “Device Advanced Settings”.

Select option just like in the screenshot below and click on “OK”

Open Speaker tab, then click on the active back panel speaker icon, set it as default device.

If you plug your microphone on back panel, open microphone tab and click on the active microphone icon then set it as default.

Your Realtek HD Audio card plugged and unplugged problem has been solved.

Honestly I don't remember. I had a PCI card installed but couldn't get sound out of more than 1 speaker so I removed it. Don't remember if I plugged the front panel back in.

Damn sound issues. On board sound won't work and my PCI card not working as it should. I guess I need to spend some time on the phone with tech support. The sound card I got is an ASUS Xonar.
