Baldurians,

Been playing POR: Ruins of Myth Drannor, and since my party was fairly
diverse, my party has been single classed. However, Ms. Kestrel (I've
been playing the stock characters) has topped out at 16th level Rogue.
Not having anywhere else to go, I chose to multiclass her to a Ranger.
She is now able to use a wider variety of weapons, in particular a
very nice longbow. When she attacks with that longbow, does she attack
has a 16th level Rogue, a 1st level Ranger, or the best of the two
classes?

I think she is hitting less often, but it is difficult to tell since
so many creatures in POR have jacked up ACs.

thanks,

Enkidu

If they have implemented the rules properly she should attack as a 17th
levl character - 16 rogue + 1 ranger. Her Base attack - not counting
items or stats should be +13/+8/+3. Note that rangers can dual wield 2
weapons as if ambidextrous and 2 wpn fighting skill - even without these
skills.

Add the attack bonuses for the 16th level rogue (+12) and the 1st level
ranger (+1) to get +13. For every full five points, you get an additional
attack, at cumulative -5 penalties. So this character gets 3 attacks per
round, at +13/+8/+3.

Thank you Kharsis and Hong Ooi, you've answered my question perfectly.
This explains the three numbers within the character screen which
made no sense to me, being an old guy from the age of THACO. You've
also explained why second and third attacks hit less often.
Unfortunately, the cheapy version of the game doesn't include a manual.

You can get the bare-bones 3E/d20 rules here:

http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=d20/article/srd35

Or in a more friendly format as a bunch of HTML pages, here:

http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/index.htm?35/sovelior_sage.htm

These are for the updated version of the game (3.5E) released last year, as
opposed to the 3.0 version that PoR is based on. However, the basics are
still the same.

Don't mean to be a doubter, but can someone verify that this is
correct? I've always figured it out differently.

I've always thought as follows:

A lvl 16 rogue gets 3 attacks with +12/+7/+2.
A lvl 1 ranger gets 1 attack with +1.

Combining these gives you 3 attacks per round, with +13/+7/+2.

A lvl 6 ranger gets 2 attacks at +6/+1. A multi-class rogue 16/ranger
6 would then have 3 attacks, at +18/+8/+2.

Or so I have always thought ...... Which is correct?

Thanks.

Second, third, and fourth attacks don't have their own BABs. Rather,
each of them is at 5 less than the preceding attack's BAB. A rogue
16/ranger 1 would therefore have +13/+8/+3 BAB. +13 BAB is always
followed by /+8/+3.

Thanks. I tried to look it up in the D20 docs, but couldn't locate
it. Guess I just over-analyzed and assumed incorrectly how it worked.
