Port forwarding problems

Hi everyone. I'm am trying to forward my ports so I can setup a minecraft server. I am having trouble doing so. The guide I was following said I need to set up a static ip. I called my isp to get my dns servers to do so and they told me that I would not be able to do so as only businesses were able to. Is there any way to work around this?

Do you have a router? You can use the router to port forward to your minecraft server.

If so...your computer can be set to "static" IP mode. The only thing you would need to know all the time is what IP address your cable modem receives - so your friends can connect.

BTW that's strange - the ISP I use can give me a static IP for something like a measly 5 extra bucks a month.

yeah I tried to port forward through my router. Initially it was saying ping timed out when I checked the port. When I turned off my firewalls it said it was closed. Not sure what to do next, that is why I was trying to follow guide.

Port forwarding only works from the WAN side of the router. When you tested, did you use a PC that wasn't on your network? Also, if you don't have some kind of DDNS set up, then you will need to know your current public IP address. Be sure your minecraft server's firewall is also allowing connections.

You might want to see if your router supports DDNS and which ones it uses by default. A lot of routers support DynDNS, so you may want to look into getting an account with them. This will save you from having to know your public IP address all the time.
