It says disk 1 but does not show brand and capacity. Is there anything else I could try?
If it's not showing a brand or capacity, there are only a couple of alternatives that I'm aware of.
1. Depending on the brand, manufacturers often offer diagnostic tools to help establish if the HDD has sustained damage (and whether you can salvage it). Visit the manufacturers website, or search for XXX external HDD diagnostics.
2. It might only be the external enclosure, removing the HDD from the enclosing & putting it into a new enclosure or another computer (unless it has a bootable OS, or your laptop has 2 HDD bays, you likely won't be able to do it with your laptop).
3. My only other suggestion may make the HDD useable again,
but would format & erase all data.....which obviously you don't want to do (The suggestion would be to right click on the drive in disk manager & "initialize")
