Portable SSD w/ Ubuntu OS

Hello,
I was wondering if it would be possible to run Linux on an SSD in an external drive enclosure that I could take to run on different laptops or dekstops. If so how would I go about installing it on the SSD?

Sure, same way as you would run any live linux distro, download the ISO, use a ISO to USB utility to create the boot disk.

USB stick, USB drive, all the same for the most part to the Linux setup.
