Hey Guys (and Girls)

I know this Question has been asked WAY too many times but:

I want to replace my AMD FX6300 StockClock.

I can't decide between the i5 6600k and the i7 6700k. They are around 120€ away from each other. Which is so much money for me. I focus on Gaming. Latest Games and stuff.

Normally I would go with the i5 BUT I am so scared that DirectX12 will push Hyperthreading to a level, the i5 cant keep up anylonger. Would this even be possible?

On the other hand, the Kaby Lake refresh is on it's way and as I heard there might be more real 6 and 8 Core CPU coming. (is it even possible on the 1151 Socket? Won't upgrade my socket that soon)

So I thought about getting a skylake i5 now and upgrade to a KabyLake i7 in 2018 (only if the HT benefits are high and there are more cheaper 6-8 Core intels).
Or I get the i7 now and keep it.

I am aiming for 1080p - 1440p gaming at 60 FPS. Not interested in 4k.

The rest of my PC would be:

MSI Z170A Gaming Pro
8GB G.Skill RipJaws V DDR4-3200 (Dual Kit)
R9 270X OC 2GB (Bottleneck! Will be replaced as soon Polaris/Pascal are released)
Sharkoon WPM500 V2 (500W)
Kraken x41 AiO Watercooling

So, any informations about the use of Hyperthreading in 2016/2017? This is giving me nightmares. Can I Ignore the fact with that 6MB L3 Cache instead of 8MB?

Would like to hear some opinions from you about this.

Thank you very much

Not any time soon.

For gaming you want more speed instead of more cores/more Cache. As of now, I don't see any reason to move to 6/8/10 core CPUs if you're gaming, exclusively.

I would suggest saving the 120 euro and going for the 6600k. You won't make any real benefits off of the HT, more cores, etc, because 90% of the games (with exceptions like GTA V) aren't multi-threaded.

Also:

For gaming only, L3 cache is close to irrelevant. Unless you want to do encoding, rendering and so forth, you won't need to sweat over that.

Get the 6600K. Invest the savings into getting a 500/512GB or larger SSD if you don't have one already (you don't mention drives in your post).

Will Hyper-Threading help in some games? Yes. Would it be enough that you would regret getting an i5? No.

More than four cores will require the 2011 socket. You would not be able to use the hardware you buy now (except the DDR4).

Thank you Heinzen and Leaps!

I will go with the i5-6600k then :) It was my first pick but I did not know what to think about that whole DX12 HT stuff.

@Leaps: I only got one Samsung Evo 850 256GB SSD and 2 x 1TB 2.5" HDDs

I might spent the 120€ into a fancy NZXT HUE+ Case Lightning (I'm obsessed with RGB lighting)

Too bad they banned the Skylake Xeon's from the H170 and Z170 :/

Thanks to both of you

Why dont you go with i7 4790k and nice Z97 mobo, it will be same price point as i5 6600k good mobo and DDR4.
This way you can keep your DDR3 RAM and have i7.
I was planing to do same upgrade as you in next few weeks.
But i still cant decide, do i go with new GPU like r9 390 or with i5(skylake) or i7 4790k.Really hard decision to make.

I already got everything except for the CPU. I wanted to upgrade to DDR4. That way I can give away my old setup to a friend of mine.
So now I have to go for Skylake 😛

As for the GPU: I am waiting till AMD Polaris Cards / NVIDIA Pascal Cards are released. I do hope they have some decent mid-class cards. The R9 2XX/3XX consume way too much power. 275W (the R9 390). So i have high hopes in those new released GPUS x)

Yea r9 390 pulls allot of power. But that was just one option. Will wait and see how will GTX 960 Ti be.I know it will be weaker GPU but will be fine for 1080p gaming and i will save some €€ for future upgrades.I think OC i5 6600k will be perfect for single GPU configuration and with coming DX12 games in next year or two, i5 will hold up just fine.I also hope that new AMD ZEN will be good and on par with Intel so that i can still say in team RED.

6600K- while DX12 will benefit from HT it is much less CPU dependent. Kaby Lake in my opinion isn't really worth waiting for, it looks to be more of a Skylake refresh. (Same fab, last minute anouncement- seems likely)
