Possible bottlenecks between cpu and gpu

okay, will my cpu : Amd phenom x4 b55 ( oc'd at 3.8ghz ) bottleneck an asus amd hd7770 2gb, and will that cpu also bottleneck a 660ti since im about to get a free 660ti anyway can you tell me if my cpu will bottleneck either of those 2 gpu's.

Probably not with that overclock. And even if so, it would be extremely minimal. What is your in game cpu usage at. Run HWinfo or Coretemp with the game running at the max normal load you can run and see what the cpu usage is. If it's less than 95-100% then the chances are you don't have an issue. If it's at 100% then clearly there's a bottleneck.

Okay with the hd7770 its usually hovering around 80 or so, but using the graph on battlefield, it shows that my gpu is doing hardly anything in comparison to my cpu which is spiking heavily

What is your resolution and what are your settings at? Medium, High, Ultra? You might try increasing settings which should drive more of the load onto the GPU and decrease the cpu usage somewhat.

Im at 1920x1080, and mostly at low tbh, i dont think my current gpu can go beyond this, on assasins creed 4 i can play it on more or less high settings (fxaa anti aliasing included) and on there my cpu and gpu usage when both overclocked are 95% ish to 100% with the hd 7770, will i see a significant increase with a 660ti or will my cpu hold it back

Well, you likely need to adjust settings differently for different titles, of course. On titles where GPU usage is above 80%, clearly you don't want to increase the settings. On titles like BF where you said GPU usage is very low compared to the CPU, increase the settings. Honestly, the 660 TI is almost twice the card the HD 7770 is, so there should be a pretty dramatic change happening there. I think you'd be ok with the CPU you have, for now, but you might want to think about upgrading before long as your CPU platform is pretty well dated.

Yeah, im on a budget and i will have to fork out for another motherboard aswell as a cpu because im stuck with an am3 socket atm. Battlefield hardline, increasing the settings honestly just drops my fps more. I cant pass up a £70 660ti that my brother may be selling if it doesnt work so well with gta 5
