Good evening,
Firstly:
I am finally going to have time to start using my gaming rig more often with a big promotion at work. With that in mind, it is obvious that my R5 2600X and RX 480 8 GB are not a good combination for Star Citizen (the most demanding game I play), Halo, and sometimes WoW, and some other lower-requirement games. However, Star Citizen will be the most I would use the system for. I will not be upgrading to AM5 any time soon and simply want to stretch out my current rig for a few more years. I may also get into some streaming, nothing crazy and really basic. Essentially, just me screwing around in-game with Discord open for comms.
With that in mind, I was thinking of either the 5900X or 5950X. The extra cores, for my use case, may not be immediately valuable if at all. But, I figure they couldn't hurt either for the extra cache of the 12-core and 16-core variants. I plan, hoping to upgrade to my whole rig in a few years and right now, the two biggest bottlenecks are my CPU and GPU.
Secondly:
My GPU is definitely long in the teeth and has served me very, very well, and is clearly no longer up to the task. With the two CPUs listed above as being on the higher end of the AM4 stack, I was looking for an RX 6800XT to round out the build. As of now, I can't find any on Microcenter right now (only a 45-minute drive) and the prices are pretty good on Newegg. I am also of the mind that I should wait for AMD to drop their new GPUs in November.
What do you guys think?
Best,
Danny
