Dear community!

Today i installed a decent subwoofer under my table, next to my PC,
The amout of bass it can produce is insane.

So i wondered, if my HDD (WD Red) could headcrash due to the heavy vibrations.
I have no clue how resistant HDDs are to vibrations.

Thanks for the help in advance!

Kind regards

Thomas

Consumer based drives are designed for vibrations. WD Reds are designed for NAS usage which limits their performance in the desktop environment. While server drives tend to lack the vibration isolation of a desktop drive, NAS drives while imitating many of the access patterns of server drives (that's what diminished desktop usage), are not generally in such a protected environment as servers. So whether they are any better / worse in that respect is a question I could not answer.

If you are using it like the guy I saw at a stoplight Saturday who had the bass cranked up so unrealistically, presumably to impress his friends, that the chrome around his wheel wells was audibly rattling and small pieces of rusted steel were falling off the car onto the pavement ... yeah then I'd be concerned.

I have a 550 watt system here and I have taken the usual precautions or isolating the subwoofer from the floor / desk, using rubber case grommets and rubber grommet mounting all storage components, water pumps etc. I play music loud, play loud and don't believe in headphones.... but, like most audiophiles, I find bass / treble controls and equalizers abhorrent. Tho I feel the sounds as well as hear them, I don't see ripples in my my coffee as I am listening at levels the artist / sound engineer intended.

If a user finds turning the bass level all the way up to "rattle the windows", I expect that might be enough to have the arm jump on the HD. Even at "intended" levels, audiophile recordings of the 1812 Overture where enough to make the turntable arm jump.

Alright, thanks for the detailed answer!

Don't worry, I am not a user turning his bass up like crazy. I like listening to bass-heavy music and therefore I like to feel what i listen to as well.
So I am not concerned anymore, that my speakers will damage any of my components.

Thanks!
