Possible motherboard issue?

Hey guys, been having some trouble with my PC recently. It's crashing on me under load a fair amount. Initially my graphics card was a HD5970 2GB, and the computer would just loose signal while playing a game. It would stay on but the video signal would cut out so, I thought it was a GPU issue. I swapped the card out for my old 768MB 8800GTX to see if it helped, but now testing under Prime95, or just trying to play Skyrim, my PC will just completely freeze with no way to do anything without holding the power button, so now I'm not sure what the problem is. My temperatures for prime95 when I had my i7 oc'd to 3.9ghz were about 80 with core temps around 84. Also my SB and NB temps even idle are about 50-54 degrees, does that seem high? I've also run memtest for hours and everything seemed ok. Any advice would be really appreciated!

My specs are:
i-7 750 @3.2GHZ
Rampage II Extreme mobo
HD5970 GPU (currently swapped out for a old 8800GTX)
4GB Corsair XMS3 DDR3 RAM.

Thanks for the reply. I did some stress testing, first with Furmark and it shutdown. Then I did it with LinX and still the same issue, so I don't think it's the CPU or GPU. Neither of them got very hot (I was using my 5970 again) and it peaked at about 80 - 85 on an Xtreme burn in. On the CPU, LinX got it to about 70 degrees if a bit more. Could this mean faulty RAM or powersupply?

Something could be overheating, such as the power supply. Hard to say; time to start swapping parts. I always keep a spare ps for these types of problems. If you try a different video card driver, be sure to uninstall your current driver first. The new catylist drivers are large files, and may take minutes to uninstall. Then download the driver you want to try off the chipset manufacturer's webpage, such as amd or nvidia. Sometimes the original cd driver works best; you'll just have to try a couple and see if the issue goes away. Newegg's sale is usually pretty good; frys can be better. The earthwatts 650w for $69.99 should be adequate.

Changed the drivers and still the same issue, so I've ordered a new PSU for tomorrow. I'm in the UK so I can't get from Newegg but I've picked up a 750W Corsair job that should do the job. Thanks for your help though, I'm really hopeful it IS in the PSU. I'll update here tomorrow, just in case anyone has a similar issue.
