About to have virgin fibre broadband installed at home and would ideally like the router to go downstairs for the strongest wireless signal there, but the stuff that i would like as a wired connection is upstairs so my question is this.

Would an ethernet cable that leads to a switch upstairs function properly for that? would also be a bonus of i could attach a second router to the upstairs switch for a boosted wireless signal upstairs too.

Is this in the right part?

thanks

Yep, you have it right...Cat5 cable to a switch upstairs will do the trick for wired devices, and a second router connected to the switch for wifi.

Just remember to configure the second router as an access point in order to avoid problems with network sharing and access. Many tutorials available on this via search.

You want to run the second router as a AP but this is the design almost all enterprise installation use. The only possible downside would be if you were going to hook so many machine to the switch on the end of the ethernet cable you exceed the bandwidth of the single ethernet cable. That is highly unlikely in a home install and if you are using gig ports. Besides if you are just using to access the internet you will exceed your internet bandwidth well before you approach any limits on a cable.

Thanks for the answers, it wouldn't be much on the switch (ps3/ps4 and my desktop pc) which would only be on 1 at a time so i doubt exceeding the bandwith will be an issue. just wanted to check with people more knowledgeable before buying the switch.
