Possible New Coil Whine on PSU

Hi,

Today, when playing BF3, i noticed a high pitched sound coming from my psu. I haven't noticed this before. It would only usually happen in game intro screens etc when things were being pushed out at '000 fps.
Along with this, my PC cut out when playing BF3 not long after. When i moved one of my side panels, the PSU would turn on, then off again as i moved it. Not sure if that's the problem with the cutting out.

Does anyone know there to be any particular issues with these PSUs? Also, does the whine indicate a failing PSU? Finally, if anyone is clued up on the cutting out, any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

It’s made by HEC. I have seen some horror stories out there for some HEC power supplies but not for this one.

The side panel story has me worried. The only two switches that should be able to turn on or off your power supply should be on the supply itself, or on the front panel… which is a remote to the pwr contacts on your motherboard.

Could that have been a one-time coincidence?

We need to know what your MB, CPU, RAM and GPU are before we can give you any real answers.

Also, how clean is your cable routing? Are there any wires hanging about inside your case?

I did move the case slightly as i pulled the side panel off, so maybe it was that?

My Cable management is relatively good, no cables near the PSU, just some stored away underneath the HDD.

8GB Corsair Veng. LP

MSI Z77A-G41 Mobo

Palit Jetforce GTX 670

CM Elite 430 Case

1TB HDD

64GB SSD

If you have access to a DMM check the voltages coming out of the power supply.

Are you using a UPS to keep the PS from being hit by brownouts and spikes?

I can't think of any reason for this other than your GPU might be drawing too much current off the PS. Your wattage rating is close to the minimum needed to run that setup. If HEC or beQuiet! Has been over ambitious with their watt rating this could be a result.

Or if you've had some spikes or brownouts that have hit the PS your components could be deteriorating.

I usually figure out my maximum load and then add 150 Watts to be safe.

If it keeps up I’d change to a good 650 watt Seasonic or Antec (made by seasonic) or Corsair (made by seasonic).

Thanks a lot. I don't have a UPS. I will go for a new PSU. Is Seasonic the only OEM worth going for?

XFX is also made by Seasonic. Wise choice.

Check the link in my first post. Most of the really good PSs are made by seasonic. I have an Antec 620HCG and couldn't be happier with it. Its a choice you can grow into and it'll serve for a long time.
