possible power supply problems and motherboard questions

I just finished building my first computer. I have a Mach4 motherboard
with a AMD Duron 2600 processor. I also have 512MB of memory and a
GeForce FX video card. I have every cable that i need from the power
supply hooked up to the drives and motherboard but i have no idea
where the single black wires that arent part of the power supply are
supposed to go.

also, my case came with a 450 watt power supply and im not sure if it
works. heres the link for the case...
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=720575&Sku=D15-1010.
When i plug it in nothing happens. I even tried putting in my brothers
550 watt power supply, he has a Truepower or Antec motherboard(im not
sure which one is the actual brand) and still nothing happened. does
anyone know what is wrong or how to test to see if it works right?

What black wires? From the case?

What do the 'single black wires' connect to?

Did you connect the power and reset switches to the correct place on the
motherboard?

Might as well consider that power supply a 300 Watt PSU because generics
never do what the name says.

TruePower is an Antec model name like Mustang is a Ford model.

i'm sure the new powersupply is ok
however you need to consult the manual for the motherboard
as you need to hookup the power switch wires in order to turn your machine
on

You need to read your booklet that came with the motherboard.
We can't do that for you.
Apart from the power supply there are several other connectors from the
power switch, the HD & power LED, the reset button & probably the small
"system" speaker to connect.
These are usually towards the bottom right corner of your board looking at
it in your case.
You got the manual?
On a good board they are clearly marked & the connectors themselves are
marked as well.

Well, it looks like you did everything right but to connect the Power
Switch, Reset, LEDs, etc.. from the MoBo.

These cables hook to the MoBo according to a diagram provided.

You have to check that the fans, memory, CPU are properly connected.

Do you have power in your MoBo? if not then check the power supply and the
Power Switch and Reset Switch connection.
Did you install the proper memory, CPU and HDD? sometimes is the MoBo
doesn't detect any of these components it won't start at all.
If your fans, especially the CPU fan, are not connected to the MoBo, it
won't start to prevent burning your CPU.

Hang in there, my first PC, 1997, will not power up because I connected the
fan in the wrong place, I was going crazy.

If nothing else work, call a friend that has done this.

ya sorry about the motherboard thing... i skimmed through it and didnt
see anything about the black wires but then my brother helped me
connect them.

however, im almost positive my power supply and my brothers power
supply do not work. When we tried with my psu nothing happened, the
fan didnt even turn on. when we tried with my brothers, it made a
little noise when we turned it on but the fan did not spin either.
does anyone know what might be the problem?

well i think i got everything set up correctly... the only thing thats
not hooked up is the black wires labeled: Ground, Spkout Left, Spkout
Right, return Left, Return Right, Mic Bias and Mic In.

Ive tried unplugging everything and plugging the psu directly into the
outlet and not even the fan worked. I think the fans is at least
syupposed to turn on?

No, the fan won't turn on until the (thing attached to the
power supply) motherboard itself "tells" the power supply to
turn on via pulling the PS_On signal wire to a low state.

In other words hooking it up to a known good motherboard and
shorting the motherboard's power-on pins together is the
easiest way to check whether fan spins when it should.

this might sound stupid but how do i short the pins?

With something fairly good at electrical conduction, like a
paperclip, screwdriver tip or piece of wire, etc.

Hell mate I really do think you should let someone else have a look at your
comp.
Really, I mean, if it was an old socket 7 board with a P166 on it, well go
your hardest but hell,...... you're playing around with a few bucks worth of
gear & if you haven't done any damage yet by "poking around with a
screwdriver" then you've been lucky.
I'm not sure if you're serious or are having a joke with us all but
..................
Oh well it's your money..............

Truely clueless.
Supposing you take your system somewhere and they needed
turn it on by shorting the pins, what do you think they'll
use, an official "pin shorting tool" ? Sorry to burst you
bubble but they'd grab the closest screwdriver or a jumper,
the screwdriver if it were closer since it's easier to use.

Yeah OK, go for it. He didn't know that the case wires had to be connected
to the motherboard or know where to connect them to & you suggest "he short
the pins"?
Go for it.............. make some comp store rich.
Do you own the store?
