Possible PSU Issue

Hello, this is my first post here, but I have a question about my PSU. I have a ThermalTake TR2 RX 850W PSU. It started shutting down randomly and then wouldn't power on at all. I took the PSU out and cleaned out all the dust that had accumulated over the three year period that I had it. I connected it to a generic PSU tester and it showed all the voltages as correct and it powered on, but after about 40 seconds the fans would shut off. is this normal? Or is it bad?

Thank you

I may or may not be normal for the fans to shut off. Certain PSUs can run without fans under light to medium load.

....and the question I would have about the PSU tester is....

What kind of a load is it applying to the PSU?

OR

Is it just checking the voltages under no load or light load. (if this is the case...I think the test is pretty useless)

The PSU would need to be tested under full load.....meaning the full 850 watts for it to be a valid test in my opinion.

A generic psu tester can only confirm that a psu is bad, it can not confirm proper operation.

That unit is of poor quality, tier 7(worst) on this list:

I would replace it asap.
What is your graphics card?
That determines the wattage you need.
Here is a handy chart:

I like the new Seasonic focus line.
