This is the PC I has

HP Compaq

Says
"For proper system operation, the SODIMMs must be:
● Industry-standard 200-pin.
● Un-buffered PC2-6400 800 MHz-compliant.
● 1.8 volt DDR2-SDRAM SODIMMs. "

It only had 2GB ram, 2x 1GB 200Pin PC2-5300. Trying to get as much RAout of it as possible.

I bought 2x 4GB PC-6400. The two of them wouldn't work together. One works in combo w older 1GB stick with 5GB total now/. On another PC I tried
the other new stick with old 1GB and it just beeped. Removed CMOS for few min, still nothing.
Now I'm thinking one stick is simply defective.

1-Could something else be wrong ? Can it handle total 8GB PC2-6400 800Mhz w out overclocking ???

2-In this case, are 2 different size/speed sticks ok for long-term ?

Solution
I will assume that you got either CAS 5 or 6 memory as required.
Yes, it sounds to me like the second 4GB stick you tried is bad.
It will not hurt anything to run them with a 4GB and 1GB if they run.
