Hi, my old Phenom II x4 945 died yesterday. What processor can I put into it that would be roughly similar to the old one in terms of cost and performance? Since this is my secondary system I'm not looking to spend more money than is necessary, just looking for something similar to what it had before. The 945 seems to have gone out of stock at all stores near me so I I can't simply get another one of that.

In that case obviously you can go with AM3+ processors. Here is a list...
AM3 CPU's are the end of the line for upgrades. AM3+ CPU's, such as the FX CPU's, are not compatible with your motherboard.
The AMD Phenom II X4 945 is the best you can get and yes it is rare. On British amazon they still sell it: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00273JQ26?smid=A2F4RUIHAU9RI1&linkCode=df0&creative=22218&creativeASIN=B00273JQ26&tag=geizhals-am-21

For about $200 you can keep your DDR3 ram and make an upgrade buying a new cpu and motherboard. (6th gen intel or AM3+ AMD)
EG: Gigabyte GA-H110M-S2 DDR3 + i5-6400

Sorry I didn't write about my motherboard. It's a GA 78LMT which can support AM3+ CPU's.

A reasonable budget solution can be the AMD FX-630, it sells around 70 euros in Europe. AMD FX-4320 is good as well.
