possible security threat?!

Okay, so my mother is not the most technologically advanced person on the planet. Her yahoo mail account was copied and sent malicious emails to personal contacts containing viruses, luckily the people were notified before if they open the email. As confusion went on my mother suspected that she was being possibly key log or other such viruses on her mac. I asked her about opening links and or files and chats, she replied that originally in 2007 when she first got the Mac she was confused and turned on the network sharing feature. Since then, she has brought that laptop to the airport, hotels, theme parks, ext. I am worried because it contained personal information (social security, credit cards, ext). Any tips?

Do your best to lock down the device, and get credit monitoring to keep an eye out for ID theft.
