So this is my situation. I currently have a single 60/75 hz 24-inch monitor at 1080p. I would like to get a new monitor so that I could have two monitors. However, I would like to upgrade to 144hz on my new monitor.
My question is: Are there any problems with having two monitors with different refresh rates? Do I have to buy two new monitors with 144hz in order for it to work? I would like to only have to buy one new.

It will work together - but if they're not both plugged in with a Display port cable, say for example your main has the DP cable but your secondary is HDMI or something less, then your main monitor will drop to the secondary monitor's refresh rate when you have any type of videos playing on the secondary.

If they're both plugged in with a display port, you should be fine. But really that's the only caveat. Simply don't play videos on the secondary screen when playing your game on your main. Sometimes however it doesn't do this when the video is in fullscreen mode. I speak from personal experience. I have 144 Hz with DP cable, and a 60Hz with HDMI. The gen version of HDMI also matters. Refer to hdmi gen and data transfer speeds to figure out if your HDMI can handle 144Hz. If it does then you may be fine overall.

tl;dr
It will work no matter what, your refresh rate might drop on your main screen when videos play on the second. This is a cable issue.

Does the problem with the refresh rate drop only apply to movies? Could you browse the web on the second monitor without any problems?
