Possible to put hard drive (3.5) in 5.25 inch bay without adapter?

I used to do that back when internal 3.5" bays were still uncommon. Not ideal but as razerg said, you can screw them on one side to at least prevent them from flopping around if you need to move the case and that will be good enough to get by.

Many cheap modern cases have more internal 3.5" bays than most people will ever need though.

Thanks guys!
The main reason why I am doing this is that the drive cages block a significant amount of air to my GPU, which is running hotter and louder than it has too. The drive cages are also one piece altogether, so I can't remove one or two and keep others. There is hardly any airflow getting near my GPU. Right now I cannot order anything from anywhere for awhile, and where I live have very limited tech stores. I guess I'll experiment and try to figure something out.

Solution

Right now I think I am just going to have to deal with it. I have 2 intakes (one being blocked by the cages), and one exhaust. I would say my airflow is good, but there is not air moving toward my gpu or really near it. My one fan really provides all the airflow. I thing I could do something to help, but for now I think that I will have to just deal with it.

It's possible to make your own adapter. It's fairly simple, just take a piece of metal, bend it on two ends where it needs screwing to 5.25 bay and drill four holes on bottom to screw in the hard drive. Simple as that.
