In system info it says System Type: x86-based PC. But in the about tab in system settings it says 32bit operating system, x86 based processer. Is it possible for me to go to 64bit? (i5-2400)

Strictly speaking, no, it is not a requirement. But if you're not going to add more RAM, why bother upgrading your operating system? And your system won't crash, but it may run very slowly (because it is constantly paging memory out to disk).

In my experience with older machines, there are two things that will considerably help your enjoyment of your machine as you try to extend its life: 8GB of RAM and Windows installed on an SSD.

What is your Windows licence situation? If you need to buy another version of Win-10 to get to 64-bit, make sure you buy a retail licence (rather than an OEM licence). That way when you eventually upgrade the CPU and motherboard, you can transfer that 64-bit licence.

And you will definitely want to go to at least 8 GB of RAM.

Is it a requirement? Will my computer crash running 64bit with 4GB of ram?
