I have an old HP Pavilion dv7-1444us. The "c" key doesn't work half the time and the battery only lasts about a half hour. I'm wondering if there's any cool DIY ideas i can't think of or if i should just scrap it for parts and add them to the pile.

Sell that puppy on craigslist or amazon. On my sister's old Core 2 Duo laptop, I upgraded to Windows 10, replaced the battery, cleaned it up a bit, and sold it on eBay for around $20-30. I doubt you'll want to reuse an old 5400RPM hard drive in future projects. If you're dying to add new life, you could always replace your 2.5" drive with an SSD. You most likely won't make profit, but it will definitely run faster.
